How To Make A Rental Room Feel More Like Home

We all know that when it comes to decorating a rented space, it can sometimes be a little difficult. And even if traditional decorating is out of the question (we’re talking wallpaper, shelves and painting), you can still make your new space feel more like a home to you. It just takes a little bit of clever styling.

That’s why we’re here. To help you add personality and warmth to your rented space without making any permanent changes. Nor risking your deposit!

Spring (summer, winter, autumn) clean

Yes. We all hate doing it, but it’s true – tidy house equals a tidy mind. Or something like that.
Do you really need to keep that coat you’ve had for the last four years, unworn? And those magazines that are just piling up, collecting dust? It’s time to say goodbye. If it’s taking up unwanted space, pack it up and take it to your local charity shop. Not only will you have a fresher space, you can also say that you’ve done a good deed.
Plus, more room for new clothes – that you’ll actually wear!

Make the most out of storage

If you’ve got the space under your bed, use it! Buy yourself some plastic boxes, because simple organisation really is key. Or treat yourself to some of those fancy boxes, that also look great for decoration but keep all your tat in one place – making for a totally clean room.

Double win!

Frame your favourite memories

Frame that snap of your family pet (that you dearly miss), or the best holiday you had with your pals, as pictures really do tell stories . You’ll find yourself feeling warm and fuzzy whenever you look at those memories, and they’re yours, adding character to your room. And if your landlord doesn’t want you to hang things on the wall? Lean them – on a sideboard, against a wall, below the window or on your headboard.
Simple. Yet effective!

Plants, plants and more plants!

You can never have too many plants. Ever. Not only do they brighten up a room, but they’ll instantly make you feel calmer. Plants don’t even have to cost a lot, so get yourself to your local garden centre to pick up a few greens. And if you’re not so good at keeping them? Take a trip to Ikea for all of the fake plants!
Just remember that rotation is key.

Second hand furniture

So maybe you don’t want your nan’s friends husbands chest of drawers when you move in, but when you’ve dropped your deposit, chances are, buying that new West Elm sideboard may be out of the equation. Pop down to your local charity shop, or browse on Gumtree as you never know what you may find. You might even be a dab hand at some up-cycling – which results in you having a new bedside table exactly how you want it.
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure after all.

Buy those candles

A little like plants, you can never have enough candles. They create a cosy and warm environment, for those cold evenings that you may want to spend alone. Dot them around your room for ultimate chilled vibes – and they’ll also make nice decoration too. Because we all love a good smelling candle.
Unless you’re a fire hazard, then maybe stick to those LED tealights.

Keep on top of that cleaning. And then some more

We’ve all had our mum nagging us, with a duster in hand, telling us to clean our rooms. And we just never quite got it. But she was right. Dusting is good, and keeping your room tidy creates less clutter and more of a space you want to come home to and enjoy.
We hate to break it to you, but if the dust piles up – ain’t nobody else cleaning it for you.

Treat yourself

Always wanted those crazy cat lady bed sheets? Treat yourself to some new bedding, because there’s nothing quite like fresh sheets to snuggle on into. Plus a bed is the main feature of said bedroom, so if you look after your bed, your bed will look after you.
Buy those cushions too, you’ll be grateful for them on a Sunday morning.

Rented house who? Your little home sanctuary more like!
