10 Best Spiced Rums To Try This Autumn

Autumn is creeping in, and the balmy summer days of G&Ts and fruity martinis are behind us. It’s time to jump on a new beverage trend, and I am LOVING spiced rum.

Rum is a warming and delicious drink anyway, but by adding flavours such as vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg, spiced rums provide a little extra for those cold autumn nights.

To help you choose your new favourite spiced rum, I’ve made a list of the best ones… time to get your pirate on!

Captain Morgan Spiced Gold Rum

Let’s start with a classic – Captain Morgan. It’s the main spiced rum you’ll spot in Wetherspoons up and down the country, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t taste amazing. Promising a “harmonious blend of clove and caramel notes,” this triple-distilled rum is matured in charred American Oak barrels to develop its distinctive, golden flavour. It goes well as a classic rum and Coke, or great with ginger ale for an extra spicy boost.

Red Leg Spiced Rum

Time to kick it up a notch with Reg Leg Spiced Rum – a premium Caribbean rum infused with Jamaican vanilla, ginger and spices. This rum is left to rest in old oak barrels until it emerges as a smooth rum with “a hint of sweet spice.”

Red Leg recommend mixing this rum into a cocktail, and I personally love the ‘Apple Shack’ – a double shot of Red Leg, mixed with 150ml ginger beer, 150ml cloudy apple juice, 10ml cinnamon syrup and a couple of wedges of lime. It’s the perfect combination of sweet and spicy!

Dead Man’s Fingers Spiced Rum

Dead Man's Fingers

Dead Man’s Fingers comes in at a neat 37.5% ABV, and is made using a blend of Caribbean rums alongside a “hearty helping of spices, which warms the cockles, stirs the soul and sets you up fair for whatever the wind blows in.”

There are notes of pineapple, Seville orange, dried raisins dusted with cinnamon and black pepper, with a touch of creamy vanilla to top it off.

The orange and vanilla notes lend this rum perfectly to creating a twist on my favourite – the Porn Star Martini – in what Dead Man’s Fingers call ‘Passion Is Dead’. To make, simply mix together 50ml Dead Man’s Fingers Spiced Rum, 25ml of lime juice, 60ml ginger beer, 40ml mango juice, and two scooped out passionfruit, then garnish with more passionfruit and some fresh ginger.

Elements Eight Barrel Infused Spiced Rum

Something a little more elegant (making the ideal present for Dad?) is the Elements Eight Barrel Infused Spiced Rum. Richly flavoured with cinnamon, ginger, clove, star anise, vanilla, honey, nutmeg, orange, lemon and coconut, you’ll go on a journey of taste with this triple-distilled rum.

It’s crafted using “naturally filtered virgin rainforest water,” and made with “perfectly ripened, hand selected sugar cane,” so you know you’re getting the best. Ideally, serve this rum neat or on the rocks so you can enjoy the full flavour profile.

Naud Hidden Loot Spiced Rum

Naud Hidden Loot

The creators call this “an invitation to a sweet tropical daydream,” and I’d be inclined to agree. An amber spiced rum, bursting with flavours such as vanilla, banana and coconut with notes of aged rum and wood, this soft, sweet and fruity rum is simply delicious.

It’s also beautifully presented in a pure black bottle, so will make a great addition to any liquor cabinet.

Jack Ratt Lugger Spiced Rum

The Jack Ratt Lugger Spiced Rum is aged in bourbon-charred barrels, at the Lyme Bay Winery in Devon. Spiced with nutmeg, orange-peel and cloves, plus a hint of vanilla, it’s a Caribbean rum with a wide flavour profile. It’s also one for the history buffs: the name ‘Lugger Rum’ originates from the name given to the fishing boats that would have been used to smuggle contraband into Lyme Bay in the 18th Century.

Again, it’s got a really cool bottle, so will stand out amongst your spirit collection!

Dark Matter Spiced Rum

Dark Matter

For something a little bit different, try Dark Matter Spiced Rum – with a flavour profile that balances perfectly between intense ginger, pepper spiciness and warm, sweet biscuit, this ruby-coloured rum adds something a bit extra.

The creators say it’s “the taste equivalent of warping into a liquid black hole but without every atom in your body being crushed to an infinitely small point” – a bold claim indeed!

A molasses-based rum which combines full-bodied notes of long pepper, fresh ginger, green peppercorns and allspice, it certainly is spicy, and goes well with ginger ale and fresh orange.

Cloven Hoof Spiced Rum

Cloven Hoof Spiced

Dance with the Devil on a night with Cloven Hoof Spiced Rum, “a curious new rum created by a bunch of rebels and renegades from Sussex.” It’s made using a blend of Guyanese and Trinidadian rum, with spices including cassia, anise and clove.

The flavour begins heavy on the cloves, but then mellows to a deliciously delicate liquorice taste thanks to the anise. It tastes great neat, on the rocks, or mixed into a cocktail.

Red Leg Caramelised Pineapple Rum

Red Leg Pineapple

A new trend in rum is the pineapple flavour, adding some fresh sweetness to the full-flavoured drink. Red Leg use the pineapple perfectly – combining “syrupy, caramelised sweet pineapple with a good kick of ginger and pepper spice, and creamy vanilla.”

The creators chose this flavour because of the traditional symbolism of pineapples in the Caribbean. Pineapples are a symbol of friendship and hospitality, and islanders traditionally hang pineapples on their doors as a welcoming sign.

This rum tastes great on its own, or combined with Coke or tonic water.

Rockstar Spirits Pineapple Grenade Overproof Spiced Rum

Pineapple Grenade

Another pineapple spiced rum, the Rockstar Spirits Pineapple Grenade really will blow your socks off. Coming in at a dangerous 64% ABV, this rum isn’t for the faint-hearted, but the flavours are just sublime.

It combines Guyanese rum with tangy mango and pineapple, layers of salted caramel and a touch of ginger, and tastes great in cocktails or is “the bomb” in a classic rum and Coke. It also comes in a really funky bottle, which is a bonus.
