6 Tips for the Perfect Flatmates BBQ

As the temperature is slowly starting to rise in London, our favourite summer activity is making a comeback. Yes, you’ve guessed it… a good BBQ with friends! Barbecues can be really easy and effortless with a little bit of organisation. So here are some tips so that you and your flatmates can have the best time without getting too worked up.

Give the grill a clean

The first thing that should be done before any successful BBQ’s is to clean the tool itself. You would be surprised how much residue is there and what a difference it will make to your cooking. Preheat the grill and give it a good scrub with a grill brush and then brush it with some vegetable oil.

Plan your menu

Think smart and save time by making a list, taking into account everyone’s preferences. Yes, even the ones of your vegan friends. You don’t need to plan a ton of dishes. All you need really is just a few choices for meat, one or two big salads, some veggie skewers, baked potatoes in foil and corn on the cob… And there you have your winning menu!

P.S. When cooking the meat, avoid turning it too many times. One flip is all it needs.

Marinade to perfection

The secret to good meat is very easy: marinade. Place some soy sauce, olive oil, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, garlic granules, basil, parsley and pepper in a blender. Blend on high speed for 30 seconds until mixed. Pour the marinade over the desired type of meat and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours before grilling. It will make the meat tender and perfectly seasoned. For more marinade ideas have a look here.

Choose a signature drink

Of course, beer is always welcome but if you want to take your BBQ that extra mile why not go for a summery drink such as sangria. Gin tonic is also very easy to make and you can add in some fresh fruits such as lime and strawberries! If you don’t feel like an alcoholic drink, try one of these 11 twists to the classic lemonade.

Create an ambience

If you have a bit of time on your hands why not go the extra mile and personalise your garden! Colourful tablecloths and cutlery can bring life to your space and brighten it. Whilst little lanterns or fairy lights will make it cosy especially when the night falls. Don’t forget to create a playlist so that you don’t need to worry about changing the songs all the time. Think of having some entertainment for that active flatmate who always needs to move, like a football ball or badminton rackets.

The more the merrier

A BBQ is the best time to socialise and invite your friends over. Get to spend time with your flatmates and their mates! Everyone is happy when the sun is up, the food is good and the music is playing… so the more the better really! I bet you can’t wait to start planning your next BBQ now… so go ahead, the summer is just starting!
