Flatmate Stories: Jenni and Lana

Each month Ideal Flatmate sits down with a group of flatmates to hear about the highs and lows of their flat-sharing journey. In this first edition, we talk to Jenni and Lana, bloggers from Hackney who each had their fair share of flatshare nightmares, but have now settled in and love sharing a flat together.

Here are the questions we asked them:

What is it like to have flatmates?

Lana

“It’s cute! You feel like a little sense of belonging. You’ve got your little bubble and your community. And it’s cool like coming home and having other people around, or waking up in the morning and hear someone making coffee. It gives you more of a sense of home I think.”

Jenni

“It’s like a family away from your family. You come home and you can tell people about your day, chill out after a long stressful day at work. It’s nice to bounce off after with people as well.”

Do you think flatmates should be different or similar to each other?

Jenni

“I think a combination of both. You need to have an equal balance. You don’t want to be stepping on each other’s toes too much, but you also want to be able to bounce off on one another as well.”

Lana

“It’s cool if you have housemates with different things that they do in the house. So like if you have a housemate that is super good at DIY and saving you from spiders that’s great, and you can be the housemate that is really good at making stuff look pretty or washing up.”

Jenni

“Or even if you have a similar interest, it doesn’t always have to be the same thing, but if you’re on the same Art sort of field, for example. You can work together or go to galleries together and chat about the stuff you’re into, and inspire each other, I think that’s super important.”

And finally, what is your funniest flatmate story?

Lana

“I had a flatmate once who went out and brought the whole of a club back with him to the house and we all had to work the next morning. They were off their faces in the kitchen and I went down in my PJs to get a glass of water and they were all like: Oh my gosh, hi! How are you? I quickly made my way back to bed as you can imagine!”
