How to Find a Flatmate in Second Year of University

Finding a housemate in your second year of university isn’t always as easy as you’d expect, especially if you haven’t yet established a strong friendship group or the thought of living with your crazy friend who drinks vodka for breakfast is nothing short of terrifying.

More and more students are turning to new ways of finding flatmates when entering their second year of university. It turns out, making friends in first year and agreeing to house share has become totally old-fashioned. So if you haven’t found people to live with yet for second year, the good news is that it’s no longer a soul-destroying punch to the ego. You’re floating in the same boat as a lot of other flatmate-less students and you’ll be pleased to know that you’re well equipped for floating that boat straight into a fabulous new house.

So, before you go running around town sticking up ‘Housemate Wanted’ posters, here’s your guide to 21st-century flatmate hunting:

How to find the perfect flatmate

One of the biggest fears people have about moving in with new flatmates is living with someone who you end up feeling is more closely aligned to Satan than a perfect flatmate. Here to save the day is ideal flatmate’s compatibility quiz which matches you with other housemate hunters based on your house preferences such as sociability, cleanliness and social flexibility. This way, you’re sure to end up living with your perfect flatmate. So apologies to Satan – not today.

What to do if you know where you want to live but don’t have anyone to live with

Knowing where you want to live is actually a great first step to finding flatmates. A lot of students will advertise an empty room which you can hop into.

If you already know which area you want to live in then here’s your very own housemate finder which you can use to search according to your preferences. Filter by ‘student’ and search your preferred area to find all the other friendly students looking for their soulmate-flatmate!

Where to live if you’re a student in London

Now you’ve got your flatmates sorted, you’re probably wondering where the best places to live as a student are. In London, there isn’t so much a ‘student hub’ as there are ‘student hubs’ as preferable areas tend to vary according to which university you attend. Queen Mary students tend to stick to East London with places such as Bow, Stepney Green and Whitechapel being firm favourites. These areas are all affordable and a stone’s throw away from the university as well as the electric Shoreditch. Goldsmiths students flock to New Cross and Peckham whereas King’s College London students favour Elephant and Castle. A lot of University of East London students settle in Stratford or if saving money is a real priority for you, then you’ll find a lot of students reside in Leyton.

Where to live if you’re a student in Manchester

Manchester is an amazing student city but you don’t want to miss out on that vibrant student culture by residing in a quieter area full of people who are disgustingly successful at ‘adulting’. If you’re after a party scene, Fallowfield is home to a lot of halls of residence but also caters to mature second years who just aren’t ready to stop having fun (‘cos why should you?). With kebab shops aplenty, your most predominant needs won’t go amiss.

If you’re after somewhere cheap and cheerful and want to be closer to the city centre, then the multicultural vibrant Rusholme is another popular pick for students, which once again caters to your all-important takeaway needs.

Alternatively, if you attend the University of Manchester or Manchester Metropolitan University and travelling isn’t for you then areas such as Hulme and Oxford Road offer a fun lively vibe and are within walking distance to the universities.

Where to live if you’re a student in Birmingham

With five universities, Birmingham is not short of fantastic student areas. The main student hubs are Bournbrook, Selly Oak and Edgbaston where the University of Birmingham and some Birmingham City University students reside. In these areas you’ll find supermarkets, pubs and a whole load of fellow students. If you’re after a more peaceful mix of students and families, Harborne is a favourable area.

It turns out that finding a flatmate as a second-year student isn’t so scary after all!
