What’s On in London: September 2019

There’s no doubt that London does summer in style: thirsty sun-seekers pour out onto cobbled streets brandishing a beer-soaked shirt with an Aperol Spritz in hand; alfresco dining transforms regular mid-week evenings into lively, sociable events and perhaps most importantly, London parks become a hub for happy dogs, tipsy friends and a sense of community which can only be grasped under those sweet rays of sunshine.

You’re probably bracing yourself for the fearful end to this mini paradise, with thermals and the kettle at the ready. As September creeps up on us, evening light begins to fade and the promise of warmth is replaced with the prospect of snow.

But fear not.

September is an exciting time to be in London and, if anything, having a month with a bit of sun which doesn’t fry you like a Walkers crisp and cause you to have sleepless nights lying in a bed of sweat is surely more appealing?

Here are the top events that are not to be missed in London this September.

Totally Thames – 1st to 30th September

Hop on board for a month-long celebration of London’s very own river Thames. All kinds of exciting events and attractions will be yours for the taking in September including a mass regatta where you can test your paddle game, an impressive display of children’s paintings for you to marvel at (and wonder how a 5-year-old can draw better than you!), and even the opportunity to tango your way down the Thames – because walking and sailing are so last year. What are you waiting for? Get rolling with the Thames.

WineFest South Africa – 1st September

Think we don’t celebrate the sweet nectar of the grape often enough? Stop wine-ing about it and head down to WineFest South Africa where you can speak to real, well-respected winemakers and ask them just HOW long do you have to keep crushing your Tesco grapes before they turn into wine? As well as sipping on a selection of hundreds of delicious wines, there are food stalls serving up South African grub so you can really celebrate the country which knows its Chardonnay from its Sauvignon.

‘Dog Show’ – Until 8th September

Paintings of dogs selected by dogs… Sounds barking mad, right? Turns out our canine companions have a surprisingly good eye for art (even if they do see in black and white) and visitors across the capital are lapping up this unusual exhibition. Maybe Fluffy will be the next Van Gogh?

This year’s line-up will also feature 90s British pop giants Lighthouse Family, American singer-songwriter and founding member of The Pretenders Chrissie Hynde, East London-born RnB and soul singer Gabrielle, and Rock Choir, who return for the second year running. As if that isn’t enough, there’ll also be the 60 piece BBC Concert Orchestra and the sounds of 40,000 voices in a mass singalong. How’s that for big appeal?

Summer Streets on Regent Street – 15th September

Regent Street transforms from its usual traffic-filled hustle to a festival atmosphere for one day in September as it hosts its Summer Streets celebration. The street will be pedestrianised from Oxford Circus station to Piccadilly Circus station, and filled with a range of stalls and activities for the whole family. These include a helping hand from celebrity and magazine stylists to help you find your AW19 look, a showcase of sports style and Japanese heritage from Asics, tea sampling from T2 and table tennis with Tommy Hilfiger. There’ll also be street food from the neighbourhood’s finest eateries in case you get peckish – think oysters and champagne from Bentley’s Oyster Bar & Grill, gourmet doughnuts from Crosstown Doughnuts, and vegan and vegetarian delights from tibits.
